In the wake of recent increases in the market price for coffee – reaching highs that have not been seen for over 5 years – there have been some questions asked about the ongoing importance and relevance of Fairtrade. Such comments have mostly focused on the issue of the Fairtrade guarantee of ‘A fair price’, only one of the six principles underpinning Fairtrade, and do not fully take account of the development agenda that Fairtrade supports and facilitates.
